Young people’s mental health

Growing up is meant to be one of the very best times in anyone’s life but it can also be tough. Children and young people of this generation have new challenges to face including the prevalence of social media and the changing world of work.

The emotional wellbeing of children and young people has a significant impact on all areas of their lives including academic achievement and relationships with friends and family. Mental health problems are common and it is vital that young people get the support they need.  75% of adult mental health illness starts before the age of 18.

In Gloucestershire we have a website that helps young people, and the people who care about them, find out what local services are available to support them through difficult times.  It also includes self-help information, national helplines and links to other useful websites.

Support for parents

If you are worried about your child’s health and emotional wellbeing it can be a very anxious time for you and the whole family.  There are organisations who can help and support you.

Family Lives

Family Lives provides advice on all family issues.  They have a 24 hour helpline which you can contact on 0808 800 2222 or you can go to to find out more.

YoungMinds Parents’ Helpline

The Young Minds Parents’ Helpline provides help and support particularly around young people with mental health problems.  You can call them on 0808 802 5544 (Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4pm) or email Visit their website here, which provides information on a whole range of mental health issues that your child may be experiencing.

MindEd for Families

Parents who are concerned about their child’s behaviour or emotional wellbeing can go on the MindEd for Families site for free, good quality, practical information to help you to understand your child and support them through whatever they are going through.

Parents of Gay and Trans youth (POGTY)

POGTY is a Gloucestershire support group for parents and carers of young people who are questioning their sexual or gender identity. Go to their facebook  page to find out more

Gloucestershire Self Harm Helpline

The Gloucestershire Self Harm Helpline provides a safe, supportive, non-judgmental and informative space for people who self harm, their friends, families and carers.  You can contact the service by telephone, text or webchat during our opening hours, every day 5pm to 10pm.

Gloucestershire Eating Disorders Service

If you are concerned that your child has an eating disorder the Eating Disorders Service is there to help people of all ages in Gloucestershire and their families. You can contact them directly on 01242 634242 or email or

The Eating Disorders Service also runs a support group for young people and their families every other Thursday between 7pm and 8pm at the Brownhill Centre in Cheltenham.  This is a safe place where your child and the rest of your family can get extra support for eating problems, alongside other people who understand what it is like to live with an eating disorder. Clinicians are there to answer your questions and give more information.

Mood café – Children and Young People with anxiety a guide for carers

The Royal College of psychiatrists have produced a range of leaflets around Mental Health and Growing Up, this includes information for parents on depression, coping with stress eating disorders.
